The Journal of the Association for History and Computing,
Vol. I, No. 1., June 1998

This journal is sponsored by the American Association for History and Computing, organized at a conference held in Cincinatti in 1997. The AHC aspires to promote and develop interest in the use of computers in all types of historical study at every level, in both teaching and research. We believe that computers and computing are rapidly changing important elements of the work of historians and students of history, constituting a major transformation in the way knowledge is created and communicated. A major goal of this journal is to help define useful standards to maximize the utility of computers in historical studies.

The Journal is intended for a general audience of teachers, students, and researchers interested in the application of computers in historical studies. It is our intention to keep our readers abreast of the latest developments in the field. In addition to articles dealing with the creative application of computers to particular problems in history, we will also be reviewing relevant research in the field, appropriate software, and related Internet resources.

The Journal is intended to be fully interactive. Through a variety of means, including our email LISTSERV, H-AHC, we will facilitate an on-going electronic conversation around general issues in the field as well as dialogues concerning material appearing in this journal. Please subscribe to H-AHC.

We welcome contributions from those interested in issues or resources related to history and computing. For information on submissions, see our style sheet. This journal contains both peer-reviewed articles intended as a contribution to this field, and peer-reviewed works-in-progress intended to solicit thoughtful criticism. See the Call for Contributions for an explanation of these sections of the journal.

The Journal will be published quarterly, though individual issues will be continually updated for a period of one year via interactive devices before being archived. If you wish to be notified by email as each volume of the Journal is published, please email kdvorak@BGNet.bgsu.edu and in the subject heading enter: "Notification JAHC."

The Editors

For an extended discussions of the reasons why we consider an electronic journal necessary and appropriate for the fields of history and computing, see "Why An Electronic Journal...."

EDITORS NEEDED: The Journal is soliciting nominations for the Editorial Board. We are aware that we are particularly weak in issues relating to computers and history in the K-12 levels; you may notice other areas in which you feel we need help. If you would like to nominate yourself or another, please send an email with a vitae or description of your qualifications and interests to Jeffrey Barlow.
