ABOUT THIS SITE
- The full English-language text of the indictment of Milosevic Please note: This material was copied from the web site of the International Tribunal on June 3, 1999. We assume it to be a public document. We reproduce it here because the original is formatted in a frame and is very difficult to read. Consequently we will leave our copy posted here for ease of use, but would prefer that anyone wishing to cite or quote the materials would read them on the International Tribunal's web site <http://www.un.org/icty/>
The recent dramatic event in the story of Kosovo was, of course, the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia. As this affects the creators of these pages not only as Americans, but as long-term students (and residents) of China, we will be following this issue closely.
- (June 1) Jane's Defense Weekly has added a short piece bearing upon the bombing of the Chinese embassy.
- There are now several Chinese sites presenting the Chinese perspective on these events. See E-resources.
- Was the bombing of the Chinese embassy deliberate? Because this is, to most Americans, an inconceivable notion, we are collecting thoughtfully written materials which speculate that there are reasons to consider the possibility that the bombing was not accidental. Here are several such perspectives:
- Here is a letter from the noted scholar Peter Dale Scott suggesting links between the bombings and peace iniatitives underway at the time the bombing occurred.
- For another interpretation of those events see this letter from Chalmers Johnson, a noted Asianist, speculating on the motives of the CIA.
- later follow-up by Johnson:
- See also Steve Kosokoff's speculations in his letter of May 10.
See fund raising plea in Terry's letter of April 16.
See call for action on the Campaign to End All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
We are adding E-Resources as time permits. We welcome nominations for additional resources.
RE Kosovo: Letters from Macedonia
ABOUT THIS SITE:
- This site consists primarily of a series of e-mail messages and articles written by one or both of a Portland, Oregon couple, Steve Kosokoff and Terry Rogers, who have been resident in Skopje, Macedonia, just across the border from Kosovo (For maps, see Resources page.), since Fall, 1998. Here is Steve's explanation of why they are there:
We came to Macedonia to do interesting work in an interesting place, and to possibly help a new, struggling country move forward. Steve had taught for a year in Huhhot, Inner Mongolia (an autonomous region of China), and both Steve and Terry had worked for a year in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Steve is a teacher and recently took early retirement from his job as Chair of the Department of Speech Communication at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Terry was the Executive Director of Legal Aid (legal services for the poor) in Portland, Oregon.
Terry now works for Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI). It has liasons in over 20 countries and works mostly on law reform. So Terry works with judges, lawyers, members of parliament, etc. to try and reform the legal system, to modernize it, to make it work better for everything from criminal law to commercial law. She did similar work in Kyrgyzstan and would like to continue in this area in the future.
Steve is now a teacher. Last spring he taught U.S. History at Saints Cyril and Methodius University, the national university. In addition, he teaches Speech and Debate at a private American-style high school (Nova Gymnasium). And last winter he taught Public Speaking to the U.S. soldiers stationed here.
- Terry and Steve have sent more than 50 "Group Letters" to friends since their arrival in Macedonia, as well as a number of private communications. We will post their letters on this site in the belief that they add additional information to what threatens to be a prolonged American involvement in a little-known region. The three of us have created this site in the belief that what is occuring in Yugoslavia is important, and that the possibilities of additional American involvement make it more so for American readers. We will begin by posting the most recent letters from Steve and Terry as they speak most directly to recent events. In coming weeks we will be adding earlier letters.
- This site is edited and maintained by Professor Jeffrey Barlow, Chair of the Department of History at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The letters have sometimes been lightly edited to remove personal details.
- METHODOLOGY: Jeffrey Barlow is a professional historian (vita) and the editor of the Journal of the Association of History and Computing, a fully peer-reviewed electronic journal which is helping to define standards for researching and writing history within an electronic environment. In this site we will try to maintain the highest possible standards for materials of possible interest to historians, as we believe these communications to be.
- TO CONTACT THE AUTHORS OR EDITOR: To maintain the privacy of Steve and Terry we will not post their email link. The editor, however, will be happy to forward relevant communications to them so that they may choose to reply if they wish to do so. barlowj@pacificu.edu
