DRM Options

Digital rights management products and services encompass a wide range of business models, from secure sharing of content for business collaboration with employees, partners and clients to driving the media e-commerce for music, video and e-books. In addition to the products discussed in this article, the following solutions* are available.

ATABOK (www.atabok.com) offers Digital Wrapper and File Protection System, which enable controlled sharing of content within an organization and with partners and customers. Integrates with ATABOK's suite of Virtual Communications Network (VCN) solutions for secure data delivery.

Digital Island (www.digitalisland.net ) is a B2B and B2C service provider that manages customer transactions and delivery and management of digital assets. Its 2Manage service modules include DRM for Windows Media content files, providing a variety of licensing models, including pay-per-view, pay-per-download and
subscription-based services.

DigitalOwl's (www.digitalowl.com) KineticEdge manages digital rights to PDF and HTML content for controlled sharing. Its TitleVision client enables end users to have a personalized view of authorized content on PCs, PDAs and wireless devices.

DMOD's (www.dmod.com) DMOD Workspace is a niche DRM solution designed for creative collaboration on digital media projects. Its suite of Workspace products is aimed squarely at film and video, DVD and music production.

dotEncrypt (www.dotencrypt.com) is a British-based ASP that charges monthly and transaction fees for DRM services. Business models include the selling of digital content on the Web and protected sharing of content on an enterprise level.

eMeta (www.emeta.com) markets eRights, which focuses on information commerce, including medical, financial, scientific and educational organizations, by restricting use of content-free, pay-per-view, subscription, etc.--on a customer-by-customer or license-by-license basis.

IBM (www.ibm.com) offers Electronic Media Management System (EMMS), a suite for integrating highly flexible DRM protection into a wide range of content sharing and distribution models, including music, books, video games, software and sensitive corporate information.

InterTrust's (www.intertrust.com) Rights|System suite of packaging, server and client products delivers protected content to almost any kind of device, including PCs, TVs, phones and PDAs.

Macrovision's (www.macrovision.com) SafeCast technology controls the sale and distribution of any type of content--from text to video--on CD-ROM, DVD or the Internet. It allows distribution of trial and "try-and-buy" products.

Microsoft's (www.microsoft.com) Windows Media Rights Manager aims to control the delivery of music and video. It includes a Windows Media Format SDK for creating the DRM wrapper.

Perimele's (www.perimele.com) Rights Technologies is designed to do everything from protecting financial records to preventing software piracy. Available through OEMs, service providers or as a hosted solution.

Viaquo's (www.viaquo.com) ViaSeal provides role-based access for protection of digital assets and proprietary information, such as financial data; and controlled distribution of content, such as music, for commerce.
