Museum of Health & Medical Science - The Museum presents a 'Texas-sized' view of the human body from the inside using giant human organ models and dozens of hands-on exhibits and interactive stations that explore how each system works and how to stay healthy. The usual general information, calendar of events and opportunities for involvement are, of course, available. (20 February 1998) MF

Ocean Planet - Ocean Planet, the travelling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, has attracted nearly two million visitors. This online version contains all of the text and most of the panel designs found in its travelling companion and provides a multimedia exploration in to the wonders of the sea which covers approximately 75% of our planet. Well worth a look. (16 February 1998) MF

LightForest: The Holographic Museum - Created out of artist Betsy Connors' quest for the perfect leaf, the Lightforest is, as its name suggests, a collection of rainforest holographic images. The science behind the images is described and explained in detail including how the (holographic) images are created and why they can be thought of as 'windows with a memory'. Viewers can now reply to that tricky question with the answer 'don't speak to me I'm a hologram' with confidence(?)! (31 December 1997) MF

Bishop Museum - The Bishop Museum is the State Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Honolulu, Hawaii. The site, as well as providing the usual 'museum information' on currnet and forthcoming exhibits, also has sections on several of its departments and research projects. The 'Amy Greenwell Ethnobiological Garden' sounds particularly intriguing and the Ocean Planet, a multimedia exploration in to the wonders of the sea, is well worth a look. (30 June 1997) MF

Jorvik Viking Centre - The Jorvik Viking Centre is a real-life subterranean museum in the English Cathedral city of York. It recreates the sights, sounds and amazingly the smells of a Viking village. The web site cannot quite provide the odours and aromas but takes you on a whirlwind tour with added information on archaeology specific to York and the wider world. Anyone who ever wondered how they can make the faces of the figures so realistic can find out about the ins and outs of laser scanning of ancient remains and moulding facial features in polymer. Ticket prices and opening times for the real thing are also available. (29 May 1997) DB

The Field Museum - Based in Chicago, Illinois, this educational institution is 'concerned with the diversity and relationships in nature and among cultures'. Online exhibits include 'The man-eaters of Tsavo' and a superb dinosaur tour' . The site is well laid out with excellent graphics accompanying the text. In addition to the exhibits, there is, of course, museum information and advanced notice of forthcoming events and attractions. (15 May 1997) MF

Science Learning Network: Resources - An index to nine science education projects from museums across the USA. Subjects covered include Water Works - the physics of water, and a scanning electron microscope with plenty of fascinating images. Nine sites of the day in one! (11 December 1996) NS

Virtual Museum of Computing - A large and up-to date collection of links relating to the history of computing -everything from corporate histories to virtual museums to newsgroups dedicated to the discussion of Sinclairs, Apple IIs and other computing antiques. (21 October 1996) NS

Increase & Diffusion - The only trouble with the Smithsonians massive web site is it is difficult to get a good flavour of its contents. This attractive more-or-less monthly web-only magazine provides an excellent introduction to the human side of its work. In the inaugural issue there are features on the search for the wreckage of the Hawaiian King Kamehameha II's yacht, some poetry from an archivist in the Smithsonian's Duke Ellington Collection, and an interview with an artist performing in the Smithsonian's Baird Auditorium. (3 October 1996) NS

Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology - The oldest museum of its kind in the western hemisphere, this Massachusetts-based institution offers three online exhibitions - Against the Winds: American Indian Running Traditions, Three Generations of Women Anthropologists and "The Children of Changing Woman" - a set of reflections by a Western Apache woman who is curator of the Changing Woman exhibit. (25 September 1996) NS
