Oceans Canada - Any net surfer interested in ocean policy should catch the Oceans Canada wave. Get facts about the ocean, how it is used and abused, and read the relevant environmental and industrial acts in Canadian law. Although targeted to Canadians, the site has interesting information for everyone. (17 March 1999) JK

Sea Turtle Migration - Tracking Education Program - This site enables browsers to view a regularly updated map showing the migratory movements of endangered sea turtles being tracked by satellite. The educational content of this site is high learn all about the different species, mating and nesting, the threats they face and the steps being taken to protect them. Another in the long line of animals that needs all the friends it can get. (5 February 1999) MF

Humpbacks of Madagascar - As its name suggests, this site is all about the humpback whales which annually gather off the north east coast of Madagascar to breed and give birth in the warm shallow seas before returning to their cooler Antarctic feeding grounds. Over 100 have been counted at any one time and, as only 25 000 are thought to survive today world wide, this represents a significant proportion of the population. Listen to the weird and wonderful sounds of the whales communicating and even go inside one. Dont let the fact that it was last updated on August 17th 1998 put you off. (1 February 1999) MF

Sea Grant News Media Center - The Sea Grant Media Center provides access for the news media, researchers and educators to marine research information and resources from the US National Sea Grant College Program. As such, there's a lot here about grants and meetings, briefings and fora. The site also provides tipsheets and briefings on subjects important to all web surfers: water quality, fisheries research, and coastal science experts. There are lots of links, as one would expect, to related information such as the exciting National Sea Grant Depository and the Year of the Ocean. (25 January 1999) DB

Coelacanth: The fish out of time - Ever since its re-discovery in1938 the Coelacanth, a 400 million year old living fossil fish has attracted much interest and controversy but is now sadly thought to be on the brink of extinction. This is the website of the Coelacanth Rescue Mission, an effort to reduce fatalities in the Indian Ocean area by getting caught specimens back to the ocean floor as quickly and painlessly as possible before they suffocate. Fascinating stuff. (15 January 1999) MF

Marine Mammal Stranding Center - Ever wondered what happens to all those unfortunate cetaceans and such that get stranded on beaches and sandbanks? Well, some survive thanks to the likes of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey. Founded in 1978, the Center has responded to some 1500 calls with the aid of charitable donations and 'member dollars' to save whales, dolphins, seals, and sea turtles that washed ashore on New Jersey beaches. Animals rescued include a 5 lb Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle and a 25 ton humpback whale (both of which are endangered species). (27 October 1998) DB

Aquathought Foundation - The AquaThought Foundation is a privately funded research organisation dedicated to the exploration of interactions between humans and dolphins. Apparently, we share far more than most people realise, and dolphins have a lot more to teach us than the average mammal, including acting as therapeutic agents. The Foundation reports neurological mapping software that will bring EEG research within easy reach, which is good news. It has also developed a cyberfin for bringing to life a virtual reality dolphin. It does not say whether it would be politically correct to train it to jump through hoops or walk on its tail, though. It all begins to sound a bit 'sixties' when the mission statement says, 'To advance humanity's understanding of consciousness and its relationship to healing and wellness.' (1 June 1998) DB

The Cephalopod Page - Cephalopods include squid, cuttlefish and octopuses and holds the record for the largest invertebrate, the giant squid. Along with the usual links and mailing group information this site contains an informative 'photographic gallery' where all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures (not all found in chip shops!) are described along with a photograph and taxonomy information. After a while you'll realise that these creature are actually rather cute and a long way from the giant ship-attackers often depicted by Hollywood. (26 May 1998) MF

Charlotte, the Vermont Whale - There's this whale in Vermont, see? And in 1849 it was turfed out of its sedimentary bed by some railway construction engineers. Charlotte is 150 miles from the coast so the beluga whalebones became something of a talking point. Today, the Charlotte whale - the site doesn't say whether that's the whale's name too - is helping geologists and others to study the movement of ancient seas, glaciation and the history of the Champlain Basin - now rural Vermont. (13 May 1998) DB

National aquarium in Baltimore - Where else might you expect to find out about scorpion and snake venoms--all with lovely watery background images? The aquarium has parking meters too; the web site will tell you why. And, there's a flapping, animated fish for no reason in particular. The site also provides information on behind the scenes activities and conservation issues, as well as more on the different species that can be seen in the aquarium. (1 May 1998) DB
