NetWare printer driver problems

Network World 5/14/01

Ron Nutter, Network World

We are converting all of our printing to Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS) based on servers running NetWare 5.1 SP1 and workstations running Windows NT 4, SP5 and above. But in about 60% of the cases, the printer is delivered with U.S. printer letter settings and not the U.K. A4 settings that we require. The majority of the drivers are Hewlett-Packard. Novell is saying that we have a problem with the drivers. However, we can't understand why a particular driver should work in some cases and not in others. We would appreciate any help that you can give.

First, I suggest that you take your NetWare 5.1 servers to SP2A. I had some different problems with NDPS when I was on SP1. SP2A is supposed to put the latest updates to NDPS and it should eliminate NDPS on the NetWare server as a possible problem.

If you still have the problem, try deleting the printer you created in NDPS and then recreate it. Run DSREPAIR to see if there are any Novell Directory Services problems. Then, repeat the process of deleting and recreating the printer.

Also, check the version of the Novell client you are using on the NT workstation. The current version of the client for NT is 4.8. If you don't already have this version installed, I recommend doing so now. You may also want to check the product support page for the Novell client on www.support.novell.com to see if there are any updates for this version.

And last, it is also good to try removing and reinstalling NDPS on the NT workstation. It is possible that one or more files may not be the correct version.
